fall tour in October

Hi gang,

My fam and I want to come up there and see some autumn color. We will be driving from Dallas and can go any direction. I heard the foliage is best on Hwy 21, but I don%26#39;t know that for sure. We know we want to go to the Clinton Library, but other than that and the leaves, we are totally open.

Any one have any suggestions for route, neat places to stay or anything else one should do while one is there?

The Clinton Library is great. Don%26#39;t forget to go by Central High School (50th ann. of the desegregation crisis is next year) and also the Old State House.

After leaving Little Rock there are several good options. I think one of the prettiest drives is up Arkansas Hwy 5 from Heber Springs to Calico Rock to Mountain Home. You go through the Ozarks, lots of pretty hills, plus cross lakes and rivers along the way. You can also tour Blanchard Springs Caverns at Mountain View - one of the most scenic spots in the country.

If you%26#39;re looking for fine dining or alcoholic beverages the nearest place is Hot Springs which is less than an hours drive north on State Highway 7.

Besides the Cracker Barrel and the Pig Pit BBQ there is also Mazzio%26#39;s Pizza, Pizza Hut and a place called the Hamburger Barn. The food is pretty good and it has a neat atmosphere. Downtown there is a coffee shop/sandwich shop called Thrio%26#39;s. The college students frequent this place and the food is great. If you feel like driving there are tons of places to eat in Hot Springs. It%26#39;s about a 30 minute drive from Arkadelphia. Hope this helps!

I haven%26#39;t been to the Little Rock Zoo in years, but I always loved it when I did. They%26#39;ve had ongoing improvements for several years, and I think you and your children would enjoy it. The Museum of Discovery downtown is also popular with folks of all ages.

Two places you%26#39;d feel very comfortable taking your children to eat are the Whole Hog Cafe on Cantrell (for fabulous barbeque) and the Dixie Cafe (for home-cooked type food), which is just up the street from the Whole Hog on Rebsamen Park Road. They%26#39;re both very casual. One caveat: the Dixie Cafe doesn%26#39;t serve alcohol, so if you like wine or beer, you%26#39;re outta luck there.

I%26#39;m at work and can%26#39;t think of anymore great ideas right now - my brain is dead. Hopefully, others will give you some better ideas. Oh wait, there is one more thing. I bet your children would love seeing the ducks come down at the Peabody Hotel in the morning. I%26#39;ve seen them several times in Memphis, but never here...it%26#39;s a fun and funky thing to wach.

As usual, Susan is right on. All great suggestions. The State Fair starts the 13th so you will probably miss that. When you are at the Whole Hog you are near my daughter%26#39;s favorite playground in Alsopp Park (off Cantrell at Cedar Hill Rd). If you are inclined to drive to Hot Springs, you could catch one of my daughter%26#39;s favorites, the Mid-America Museum, and feast on barbeque at the famous McClard%26#39;s. Some kid friendly restaurants might be the Purple Cow on Cantrell and the Macaroni Grill off Shackelford, though they really don%26#39;t meet your dietary favorites. www.littlerockfamily.com is a magazine for kids%26#39; activities and shows a few seasonal events like the Arkansas Queen Riverboat and several area Pumpkin Patches opening October 1st. Have a great time.

Ozarks + Fall Colors..

Hi

Iam from the DFW Area, and am planning on going to the Ozarks when the FALL Colors are at peak(Mostly around Oct 2nd/3rd Week -- I look at http://www.ozarkmtns.com/ for updated Info at that time).

I have a few Questions in this regard..

This is what i want to do during my weekend...

(1). Drive around all the scenic drives(As Much as Possible).

(2). Secondly, would like to Hike / Bike around in the Valley.

Would like to stay in a Log Cabin kind of thing..

Where(Place .. Village/Town) do u think i should make as a Focal Point?

Ozarks + Fall Colors..

Branson or Eureka Springs would be a good base for you because of all the lodging options. Honestly, the third week will probably be past the peak of fall colors - the first or second week would be best.

There are lots of scenic drives in NW AR and SW MO, through the hills and around the lake. When you narrow down your choices, I would be glad to make more suggestions!

It depends on our weather here. Honestly it has been SO Warm we may not have a change until mid October. The temp has to consistantly be in the low sixties - still 80-90 here now. The drive from LR north (Fayetteville) or West from LR to Hot Springs is beautiful to see the wonderful change. The best village/town to visit and enjoy the scenes is Eureka Springs or Hot Springs both offer many tourism areas. Good places to eat and stay. Bath house row is interesting to tour in HS. Enjoy your stay!

FYI - you can get a direct flight from Dallas to Springfield - airport code SGF.

The weather has been warmer, but as of today it is starting to cool off - it is 55 in Springfield right now with a high today in the mid-70%26#39;s - my money is still on the second week of October.

You shouldn%26#39;t miss the Scenic Byway of Highway 5 through the Ozark National Forest (ONF) - Mountain View, Calico Rock and Mountain Home serve as the towns to visit along the way. There are great hiking and biking trails in the ONF, particularly between Mtn. View and Calico Rock, plus the Caverns at Blanchard Springs are incredible (many times more beautiful than Carlsbad and Luray).

As for checking on the leaves - local nature photographer Tim Ernst keeps a blog going to update the turning leaves in the Ozarks.

Due to the warm weather the colors have just not made it here yet. They are coming but probably won%26#39;t be in full glory by next weekend since we are in for another warm week next week. I would take Hwy 7 which I believe you get on around Russellville. It will take you straight through the Ozark National Forest. In Harrison I would take Hwy 62 over to Eureka Springs for a day or two before heading on to Missouri. Beatiful country even without full fall colors. Hope you enjoy your trip.

Eureka Springs would be a great place to stay but I would also suggest Devil%26#39;s Den State Park south of Fayetteville would meet your requirements. They have inexpensive cabins to stay in and is full of hiking/biking trails. I would recommend the Yellow Rock trail as it leads up to an overlook of mountains/trees that will be beautiful with color. You can do a search for Devil%26#39;s Den State Park and go to their website for more info.

Arkansas is really not the best place to do winter activiites. You would be better of in colorodo or one of the upper northern states..We do get snow , but it is never very much and you never know just when....Sometimes it can even be in the 60%26#39;s in winter here during the daytime..So go north is my advice....

For reliable winter sports you should check out sites in Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

Looking for Atomic Age, Classic Neon Motel/Hotels

My sweetie and I are taking a cross-country road trip next August and we%26#39;d like to stay in hotels or motels that have that real vintage vibe.

I love the Safari Inn, in Burbank California. Sweet Motel with pool and vintage neon but modern facilities.

It%26#39;s easy to find pictures of Classic Neon signs but I want to stay the night in a place that looks straight out of the 50s (or 30s, 40s, 60s) but isn%26#39;t a rundown dump.

Each caboose has its own private driveway - fashioned to look like a railroad bed, an outdoor hot tub on a large deck with outdoor furniture, a grill and hammock. Nature trails lead to a picnic area.

Don’t know what route you want to take to find these Classic Neon’s of the 50’s and back, but you may want to check into information on the classic route 66. There are still many of the ol’ cafes, motels etc on the route. You may want to check your library for books on the topic. I can tell you of an interesting place called Oatman Az. near Bullhead City %26amp; Kingman that is on Route 66 and continues to live. It’s a very pleasant and interesting place even today with historic buildings etc. The town is overrun at times with wild burros that come down from the mountains each day to great the visitors in town. I’m trying to remember if there is a hotel there for visitors but just can’t recall at this time. However you can always stay at Kingman they have plenty of hotel/motels.

I can’t remember the time of year, but there are some old car enthusiasts who drive route 66 every year from Seligman Az to the west. Many of the towns even in that small stretch of highway continue to have “cafes and motels” up and running. You surely want to get a book on the history of 66 as much of it remains in places, I-40 took away most of the miles but there are a lot of small towns that continue to survive.

I think I’ve found a good one for you. Located in Gila Bend, Az. about an hour drive south west of Phoenix. I’ve added two links that have pictures of the hotel. The one link has several pics that are very interesting. My wife and I have been there to eat lunch but never stayed the night, just driving through. This is another good stop while checking out route 66 in the northwest part of Az. I provided a little more info about that in the other post here.

The Satellite motel in Omaha at 60th street %26amp; L streets is another oldie. I lived in the small town about three miles south west of there years ago. And the last time I visited the area it was still there. Don’t know much other then that.

Hot Springs, Arkansas is a must !! There are a couple of vintage %26#39;50s hotels in Hot Springs. Velda Rose Hotel and Spa and the Downtown Hotel and Spa. Practically every hotel in Hot Springs worth its salt is a ';hotel and spa';.

Hot Springs heyday peaked in the 40%26#39;s and 50%26#39;s and the downtown area reflects that.

There is the Arlington and Majestic hotels these are the mega-hotels in Hot Springs hundreds of rooms each. Down by the racetrack you will find the 40%26#39;s and 50%26#39;s style motels and many of them retain 40%26#39;s and 50%26#39;s names. Most are fairly rundown and now cater primarily to the racing crowds. One that I personally found interesting was the Happy Hollow Motel, it has been around since the %26#39;30%26#39;s and is still going strong.
