Antiques and art

Where are some good places around Fayetteville to shop for antiques and original art?

Antiques and art

I responded in your message about places to eat but I believe that walking around anywhere downtown (Dickson %26amp; the Square) you will find interesting shops to explore. Also, Gift House Antiques on Mission Blvd in Fayetteville. Most fun for me is to take a daytrip to Eureka Springs! See also www.artamiss.org

Happy Hunting! Sarah

Antiques and art

coffee houses with local art: commongroundsar.com %26amp; arsagas.com. Plus check with the Fayetteville Public Library to see if it has any art events going on. It also has an Arsagas in the lobby!

I hope you have time for one more website: www.ozarkartistsgallery.com

Antiques: French Metro on Dickson St.; French Quarters Antique on North Block St.; There%26#39;s also Twisted Tree Antiques on North St. between Gregg St and Leverett (right by the railroad tracks).

  • questions about a resort and what is going on in april

HI can anyone tell me about emerald isle condos. We will be coming on April 14th and I wanted to know about this resort . has anyone stayed there recently? What can you tell me about the resort. and also what events happen in mid spring. is horse racing still going on? I have read about bath house row. This forum has good suggestions on places to eat. I have written them down. and the state parks.

questions about a resort and what is going on in april

Horse racing ends on April 14th, so you%26#39;ll miss out on that. The good news is, you%26#39;ll also miss out on the traffic that comes with it. :)

    Hotel Options & location

Hi we are planning a trip over next week,we have never been to the Hot Springs area-so I feel a lil lost....

Can anyone reccomend a place with an indoor pool for my children I found Holiday inn Express %26amp; Country Inn %26amp; Suites-we are wanting a place with easy access to Crater of Diamonds St Park

Also any info on Crater of Diamonds or helpful hints or tips.

    Any not to miss restaurants?

How do you go about getting a ';bath'; and what are the rates-I saw something on bath house row but i got the impression the bathhouses are closed?

    Things to do ';on the cheap';

    Thanks for your help!

    Hotel Options %26amp; location

    Hi pastasalad,

Both hotels are on the same street, and are in a central location, but not in the ';touristy'; area. As for the Crater of Diamonds, the hotel wouldn%26#39;t matter. It%26#39;s in Murfreesboro, about an hour and 45 min. away.

Mc Clards BBQ is very famous! If you like BBQ, don%26#39;t miss it. It%26#39;s a small mom %26amp; pop place, but is very well known. You can buy their sauce for a souviener. There are a lot of great places to eat. If you can stay away from the ';chain'; restaurants, (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc), you%26#39;ll find a lot of hidden gems. My personal favorite is the Hot Springs Brau Haus. Even if you don%26#39;t like German food, they have pasta and several non-German things. The atmosphere is SO much fun! At night there is usually live music - mostly on the weekends, but some weeknights.

    Here%26#39;s some info about a bath. www.hotsprings.org/things_to_do/baths_spas/

Also, come prepared for bad traffic. It%26#39;s Oaklawn race season, and there%26#39;s ongoing construction on Central Ave. Other than that, the rest of the city will be fine. Restaurants tend to be crowded after the races let out.

    Have a great time!

    Hotel Options %26amp; location

    Thanks for the reply.

we stayed at the country inn and suites-except for a few minor probs it was a nice place with a good hearty breakfast.

we didnt encounter too much traffic-guess we got lucky on that.

    The crater of diamonds was a fun expierence for the whole family glad we did that! No luck on finding any diamonds tho%26#39;

We ate at salsa%26#39;s it was really pretty good, excellent service and at The Cajun Boiler-the guys really liked this place.

We plan to come back in the summer and visit Magic Springs

Sorry, I didn%26#39;t realize you%26#39;d already been. :( I shoud have read more closely. Anyway, I%26#39;m glad you had a nice time! :)

    Best Steak and Seafood

    Hello,

Visiting in April for first time to the Arkansas Derby. There will be 3of us and I am wanting to take my mother for a nice steak and lobster tail? I was reading about Chef Pauls, Belle Arti and Coys? Please help, got the bbq place down. ha Will it be hard to get into places derby w/e? I bet it is packed isn%26#39;t it?

Any suggestions on live country music? Thanks, D

    Best Steak and Seafood

Of the three restaurants you name I%26#39;ve not eaten at Chef Paul%26#39;s but have heard good things from those who have. We%26#39;ve dined at Belle Arti twice, the first time I thought it was excellent, the second not so hot. Coy%26#39;s is an institution in Hot Springs. Their steaks are first class. Here%26#39;s Coy%26#39;s web site.

    http://www.coyssteakhouse.com/

As for crowds on Derby Day, yes places will be packed.

    Best Steak and Seafood

I agree with CPA on Coy%26#39;s judging from your heading ';best steak and seafood';. Coy%26#39;s is noted for their steaks and they offer a steak and tail specialty. I am a fan of Belle Arti but would only go there if you are looking for atmosphere (in a historic building) and for really good pasta or Italian dishes. I have not been to Coy%26#39;s in a few years but if we were going there after the races, we would make it a point to eat light for lunch, skip the last race and head to Coy%26#39;s for a very early dinner to beat the crowds. I am not sure of their current reservation policy. I have not been to Chef Pauls but have also heard good things. Let us know how you like it if you go. Another great place if you are there for a lunchtime meal is Cafe 1217. It is an awesome gourmet type deli with big beautiful salads, and homemade soups and desserts. Get there early also even on a non-racing day.

We just got home from HS yesterday 3-16-07 and by personal experience I can tell you that Cajun Boilers is the absolute place to eat. The food and service there were GREAT. They serve any kind of Steak and Seafood you want, also alligator. You should go around 4 o%26#39;clock or have your motel make a reservation. I promise you wont regret...........We went 2 times during our stay.

    L. Essary ; Dyersburg Tennessee

I see that Cajun Boilers has been recommended. I%26#39;ve eaten there a few times and it%26#39;s OK but nothing special. It is a much more casual type place than the three restaurants you initially asked about.

I think the best steak in Hot Springs is at The Porterhouse, next door to Belle Arti and owned by the same people, the Garganos. I haven%26#39;t been to Coy%26#39;s for about a year, and it will be much longer before I return. Now that it%26#39;s no longer owned by the family, I feel it has gone downhill a great deal.

Be certain to have a corned beef sandwich at the track. Oaklawn serves the best corned beef in the country, I think. My New Jersey son-in-law agrees.

For pizza, Sam%26#39;s can%26#39;t be beat. Fresh toppings. The owner, Fran, cuts them herself. It%26#39;s a simple neighborhood bar and cafe, but good pizza.

    Enjoy your stay!

Newarkansawyer is right on about the Porterhouse. It is on everyone%26#39;s top list for steaks in HS.

  • Romantic isolated mountain cabin wanted!

Can anyone recommend a source from which to rent a nice cabin in the woods, preferably with amenities like a hot tub and king size bed? We would like an extended weekend away with nothing but the sounds of nature around us. Northern Arkansas would be 1st preference. Thank you !

    Romantic isolated mountain cabin wanted!

We enjoyed LONGBOW resort in Prim Arkansas. It%26#39;s not really a resort, but , rather three isolated cabins, none in sight, or sound, of the others.

There are a couple of Beautiful locations in the Eureka Springs, Arkansas area. Check out the listings on the internet. I have forgotten the names of the two locations we visited, and one we stayed at, however, they are incredibly beautiful places in which to stay.

War Eagle Festival...how far from Rogers?

I%26#39;m thinking of attending a nursing conference October 4-6 in Rogers. Can anyone tell me when War Eagle is this year? And how far from the Embassy Suites in Rogers? How much drive time to Eureka Springs from Embassy Suites in Rogers? Thanks so much!

War Eagle Festival...how far from Rogers?

Unfortunately you will miss the War Eagle Fair if you come Oct 4-6. The dates in 07 are 18-21 Oct. It is maybe 30-35 miles from where you will be staying but you might want to allow an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and a half to get through there in peak traffic hours. (Sunday morning is normally the least crowded time). The Fair people recommend going Hwy 412 East from Springdale for better traffic flow, though that is not the shortest mileage.

War Eagle Festival...how far from Rogers?

Your conference will coincide with the fair. War Eagle will be aprox 15 miles east off Hgw 12. Eureka Springs is aprox 40 miles east on hgw 62. You do not have to leave the hotel however as there will be an indoor fair next door at the new convention center. If this is your first visit to our area, prepare to fall in love with North west Ark. Wife and I did 16 years ago moving fron Dyer Co Tn. Enjoy your visit

Sorry about last post. Wife who keeeps up with these things first said spring fair was3rd weekend in May and fall show was Ist in Oct. The reverse is true as other post indicated. Sorry bout that.

I checked with the Fair manager and confirmed the dates for 18-21 October 07. They also highly recommend the 412 East route during Fair times.

  • Labor Day Vactation in Arkansas

We are planning a trip for the week of Labor Day to Arkansas. We know we want to go to Hot Springs and then up to the Ozarks. Possible Eureka Springs or Mountain View. We live in the panhandle of Texas so there will be a lot of driving. We are looking for cabins or resorts to stay on the river that we could possibly walk out the door and do some trout fishing. We would like to find a place that is laid back, quiet and romantic but not too far from restaurants. Any suggestions on places to stay and ';must sees'; would be great.

    Labor Day Vactation in Arkansas

Here is a place near eureka springs , never have stayed there, so i can%26#39;t say how nice, but it loks to have alot of what you want.

    http://www.eureka-net.com/riverview/

There is a nice little hotel in hot springs that does not cost an arm and a leg... and sits on the lake.....

    http://www.willowbeachmotel.com/

And this one is romantic, on a lake near eureka springs,

And one more in hot springs on the lake....

You are not very far from Branson Missouri when you are in Eureka springs, and there is a wonderful Lake called Lake taneycomo that has some of the best trout fishing around.

    www.branson-missouri.com/lake-taneycomo.asp

Feel free to ask anything more....I will try and help....

    Labor Day Vactation in Arkansas

Here is the web site of one of the better known fishing resorts in Arkansas: http://www.gastons.com/

I%26#39;ve never been there but know a number of people who have and they all give it high marks.

For other resorts, this site gives links to several other places beside Gaston%26#39;s http://www.arkansasresorts.com/

Although I see you%26#39;re been advised to try Branson, Missouri why not stay in ARKANSAS where you%26#39;ll find the ';laid back, quiet and romantic'; places you%26#39;re looking for.

If your schedule does allow a side trip come to Little Rock. We have many historic sights plus the Clinton Library.

    Garvan woodland gardens

sorry, this the one I can%26#39;t help with..never been there.. Have you seen the web site for the Hot Springs mountain tower??

    www.hotspringsar.com/info/tower/tower.htm

Awesome view from it. It%26#39;s near magic springs..can%26#39;t miss seeing it.

    Garvan woodland gardens

We%26#39;ve been there several times. It%26#39;s lovely out there. Nice walking paths, waterfalls, etc. Don%26#39;t go during the heat of the day!

sounds fantastic, I guess we should bring a couple of bottles of water and some snacks in our daypack huh?

The tower is a givin I think! ;)

I look at it as a symbol of the area that we should visit without any thought, you know like any cities major landmark.

Just got back from hot springs (july) this place was beautiful. i have pictures to share when i can get them on my computer. Take my advise get water when you go on this trail. It was hot and we hurried through most of it because we were thirsty i give it two thumbs up

It is nice but don%26#39;t expect a bunch of flowers ..that is what I expected and was a bit disappointed. It is nice but it is basically like walking on trails through the trees with some waterfalls %26amp; bridges along the way.

The flowers and flowering plants are seasonal. During the heat of summer, very little is blooming, but in Spring and Fall the colors are awesome. It%26#39;s still very pretty property whether in bloom or not.

Well there be some pretty blooms on or around the 16 or 17th of september?

    According to Garvin%26#39;s website:

September 1 - 15 Hibiscus, late summer bulbs*, roses

September 15 - 30 Cyclamen*, fall wildflowers, asters*

    The * denotes peak bloom.

Of course, this would depend somewhat on Mother Nature.

I fwe don%26#39;t get a good rain soon, it might be less likely that there will be good blooms...

    Blossom Festival?

Wondering if it%26#39;s worth the trip to go to the Magnolia festival with hubby and two girls ages 10 and 11. How are the B%26amp;Bs there? We would be traveling from Oklahoma City.

    Blossom Festival?

I am very familiar with Magnolia and the Blossom Festival, so if you have any questions, just let me know. It is a little late for this year%26#39;s festival, but maybe you can make the trip next year.

Here are some websites so that you can check it out:

    www.blossomfestival.org

I%26#39;m not sure about the B%26amp;B%26#39;s, but there is a brand new Holiday Inn Express in Magnolia.

Peabody House B&B - Romantic retreat

My husband and I just returned from Eureka Springs ... our first trip.

We loved it! Great music and artsy town. Historical and lots of shopping. We were very forntunate to stay at the Peabody House.

Romantic, convenient to downtown areas but still private. I loved this place. We could sit out on our balcony and listen to the music wafting through the air from the Basin Hotel. This is a well maintained and beautifully appointed bed and breakfast. Don%26#39;t expect the regular B%26amp;B. You are not asked to eat breakfast with total strangers... instead you have delicious pastries delivered to your room and juice/coffee/sodas are inside your room. This lovely historic home is for those couples looking for a romantic secluded retreat. Look for mid-week specials on their web-site.

Peabody House B%26amp;B - Romantic retreat

Thanks for the review..I will have to check it out..Eureka is a unique place to go..Nothing quite like it anywhere.

Sylamore Lodges, Mountain View are rated the number 1 placew to stay in mountain view.

    http://www.sylamorelodges.com/

Jack%26#39;s has the best Catfish in the area and rivials any place in the state. It is owned by long time friends of ours (www.edsrock.com)

As far as golf, the best place to play is a little further up the road in Mountain Home (plus a great scenic drive) at Big Creek Golf (http://www.bigcreekgolf.com). It was given 5 out of 5 Stars by Golf Digest in 2004 %26amp; 2006. Many of our guest have enjoyed playing there.

Also, the fishing is going to be a little better this time of year if you go up river from Mountain View (which is actually not on the White River). Calico Rock, Norfork and up around the dams (Norfork and Bull Shoals) will be a little better in the hotter weather. We have links to fishing reports from area guides that are updated weekly on our site.

Thanks for all the help. We are going to stay at Anglers. We might have to go over and try the fish at Jacks though. Thanks again for the information.

    Motorcycle Trip Sept-Oct

My husband and I will be traveling to Arkansas Sept or Oct 2006 by bike. We will likely visit Eureka Springs, Fort Smith and Hot Springs. Any advise concerning motels would be helpful. We like to stay where we can pull the bike up to or close to the room, dining close by so we can walk not ride the bike, and a chair or two outside the motel to sit and watch to world go by. Any other info on scenic roads and such would be appreciated!

I know of a motel in hot springs that is really good priced, sits right on lake hamilton .

They are not very fancy, but the rooms are nice and clean and the view is worth it.

I%26#39;m not sure if there is any dining near by.

But I have heard nothing but good things about the motel..

Hello! I%26#39;m a performer in a music show in Eureka Springs, and am also a web designer for several businesses there. I can tell you anything you%26#39;d like to know about Eureka and recommend some great motels to you. It%26#39;s beautiful in the fall, and I know many biker friendly places! Feel free to email me at leslie@lesliewright.com. Thanks!

The 1876 Inn is a good one in Eureka Springs. They offer discount for motorcyclists. Good luck!

    lilblondie 2005

Try the Talimena scenic drive near Mena. The lodge at Queen Wilhelmena State Park is nice. It is really beautiful in the fall.

I would like to recommend the Coach House Inn in Eureka Springs. We just returned yesterday (June 19) from a trip into Arkansas. We left Tulsa on Friday and rode the Talimena Drive and onto Hot Springs for the first night. Ran into a bit of rain, actually a lot of rain on Saturday during our trip up Scenic 7 to Harrison and on into Eureka Springs. We stayed at the Coach House on Sat. eve. and stayed over on Sunday since the rain was supposed to persist (which it did not). This is a small motel(about 18 rooms) that you can pull your bike right up to and it is located off the street. Your bikes will not be visible from the street. You can walk easily to dining and shopping. All the rooms have a balcony that overlooks the main drag into downtown Eureka. I have stayed in a lot of motels in E.S. and this is my favorite by a long shot. Free breakfast, not just rolls and coffee. If you would like more info about the area, please email me direct. I can share a lot. Who knows we may just join you.

We stayed at the Iron Horse Stables outside of Eureka Springs a couple of years ago. It was an old motor court motel that had been remodeled %26amp; is biker friendly. We had a good time there. The restaurant had a bygolly good breakfast %26amp; very reasonble. If you like pancakes, don%26#39;t get a stack or a short stack, one pancake fills the entire plate! It was not the Hilton, but it was clean, had plenty of hot water %26amp; you park your bikes right outside your room. Check out their website and/or call them. www.ironhorsestables.com If you had a few days to spend there, they are kind enough to offer different ride routes %26amp; approximate length of time. Have fun!

    Labor Day Vactation in Arkansas

You might want to check into the State Parks. Mt. Magazine is north of Hot Springs, I%26#39;ll actually be staying there later this month, just before your visit. It%26#39;s a new ';resort'; park that%26#39;s supposed to be very nice.

Eureka Springs is a neat area to visit, lots of romantic cabins. Cherokee Mountain is good and a break from the Victorian look that dominates the majority of architecture there; it%26#39;s about a 5 minute drive to town from there. Going about 5 minutes west of Eureka is Katie Willow. It looks not too hot from the outside but inside they%26#39;re truly beautiful. Very secluded and peaceful. Also the Comfort Inn is nice, try the Jacuzzi suites for a larger, more romance inspiring room. It%26#39;s located in the middle of town, so it%26#39;s more central to things to do. There%26#39;s not much in the way of fishing unless you want to stay at Beeaver Lake. The Beaver Lake cottages are nice but book up very quickly.

Mountain View is a smaller town, with less emphasis on tourism. Lots of great little restaurants on the town square. Hotels will be mostly smaller versions of the big chains.

Best of lucky, have a fun trip!

PS. I%26#39;m from Northeast arkansas and travel to that side of the state fairly frequently. It%26#39;s worth the drive!

    Labor Day Vactation in Arkansas

Thanks for all the great information. We%26#39;ve decided to stay at Angler%26#39;s White River outside of Mountain View. I%26#39;m really looking forward to our trip.

    jet ski rental

i was just wondering if anyone has any advice about where to go to rent jet ski%26#39;s inexpensively for use on beaver lake. thanks for any information you can give me!

    jet ski rental

I%26#39;m not sure what part of Beaver Lake you are staying at, but I believe near Prairie Creek Campground, there is a place to rent jet ski%26#39;s and boats. Prairie Creek is near Rogers, AR. It%26#39;s a great campground if you are looking to camp. It%26#39;s also nice for just a day%26#39;s visit. Beaver is our favorite!

Sorry I don%26#39;t have the name, but maybe you could contact the campground and they could help. We book online at Reserveusa.com. There should be a phone # also.

    Good luck!

Prairie Creek Campground is a nice area. Camping or just a day trip is nice. It%26#39;s near Rogers AR. Also Lost Bridge on down the lake is nice. It%26#39;s not as busy and is a pretty area, depending on where you are. Look up reserveusa.com for Arkansas/Beaver Lake camping, swimming areas, etc.

    four day trip to arkansas

My husband and I and my two teenage daughters are thinking of taking a four day trip to arkansas from Louisiana in a couple of weeks. My husband wants the girls to see mountains. I need suggestions on where to go. We are not campers, but would like to stay somewhere to see mountains and keep my teenagers entartained. Any suggestions?

    four day trip to arkansas

Drive from LA to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Spend the night in HS where there are many good hotels and restaurants. The next day take in the sights of downtown HS, bathhouse row etc. Leave HS that afternoon and take Highway 270 west. You%26#39;ll have time to arrive at Queen Wilhelmina State Parkin the Ouachita Mountains. Here%26#39;s the web site, of course you%26#39;ll need reservations. http://www.queenwilhelmina.com/

While staying at the lodge take the Talimena scenic drive, here%26#39;s a link: The vistas on the drive are magnificent.

    queenwilhelmina.com/things/scenic_drive.asp

I believe you could easily do this in four days. When you have more time come spend a few days in Little Rock and also visit Arkansas%26#39; other mountains, the Ozarks.

    four day trip to arkansas

Thanks oldcpa for the information, I will checkout the websites that you gave me. Yes, we will need to plan a longer trip to Arkansas. Everyone I talk to tell me how beautiful the state is.

You might also want to check out Eureka springs, it is a really beautiful victorian style village and is surrounded by beautiful ozark mountains..There are plenty of things to see and do...

And there%26#39;s Quigley;s castle located four miles from Eureka springs, with over 400 varieties of flowers, it on the historic national register. It also has a butterfly, fossil, crystal, arrowhead and glassware collection beyond imagination.

    http://www.quigleyscastle.com/

My husband started looking at Eureka Springs but I worry it is too far for this short of a trip. We live in southwest Louisiana and it looks like it would be a twelve hour drive. I would be able to leave Wednesday afternoon and stay in Hot Springs and then leave from there to go on to Eureka Springs. What do you think?

Eureka Springs is an interesting town but you%26#39;re correct that it%26#39;s too far in the time you have available. If it%26#39;s mountains you want, Queen Wilhelmina State Park on top of Rich Mountain will fill the bill.

Post your impressions after your trip.

As for a hotel in Hot springs, Consider the Arlington. It%26#39;s the most well known hotel in HSand is located right at the end of bathhouse row. It%26#39;s a little dated but very interesting.

I worry about you getting reservatins at a state park at such short notice...Sometimes they are booked way in advance...And the girls might get bored with not much to do and it being so very hot still..Kinda cuts back on the outdoor fun in a state park. Hot springs is only a four hour drive from eureka springs, but with only four days it might be too far for you..But it sure is nice,,, I am going to gulf shores and back in four days on labor day weekend, and it%26#39;s a longer drive... Let us know how the trip goes.... I just wanted to give you some extra info in case you decided to try eureka springs...

here are some reviews on the Arlington hotel, and willow beach motel

    tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60856-d4598鈥?/a>

It won%26#39;t be hot on top of Rich Mountain. It%26#39;s correct that you might not be able to get reservations at the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. Also, you%26#39;ve been given a link to Trip Advisor%26#39;s Arlington Hotel site. As you%26#39;ll see the opinions are all over the map. I have stayed there and agree with some of the complaints however the Arlington is in the style of the grand old resort hotels of years past. I think that considering its location in downtown HS it would be a good experience. If you want a new hotel there%26#39;s an Embassy Suite attrached to the HS convention center.

Well as of this evening, the plan is to leave Wednesday afternoon and drive to Hot Springs and spend the night and the next morning drive to Eureka Springs. I%26#39;m assuming it has to be a very scenic drive. I need suggestions on where to stay in Eureka Springs. I would want to be near the shopping district.

    clothing optional hot springs

Is there any hot springs that are clothing optional that are not sleazy for my wife and I to visit?

    clothing optional hot springs

I don%26#39;t think you understand the arrangements of the springs. They are all in the small National Park. There are only two that might be considered in a natural state. All the others go to the various spas, bathhouses and public fountains. There are certainly no place for any ';clothing optional'; activity.

Your other question: ';Can we sit in a hot spring?'; the answer to that is no, although you can certainly sit in the hot water in a bathhouse.

looking for a lake house rental

Hi, we just returned from a wonderful vacation on Greer%26#39;s Ferry Lake and now we%26#39;re looking for something for next summer. The place we stayed in is for sale so we need somewhere new. We need a place with at least 5 bedrooms. Would love something in this same area- but other lakes in Arkansas would be fine too. Any ideas anyone???

    Thanks

  • Camelot Apartments

Does any one know anything about these apartments located in Pine Bluff

    Camelot Apartments

I do know that they are in a bad area...Pine bluff overall has a high crime rate...What do you need to know exactly?

    Camelot Apartments

At one time the Camelot Apartments and the Sherwood Forrest subdivision area in general were considered upper class by Pine Bluff standards, now the area is middle class at very best. Lots of riff-raff in that area now, probably better to look in the White Hall area for an apartment.

Yeah, whitehall is just outside of pinebluff, I use to live down the road in redfield and it%26#39;s a nice , safe town..But there%26#39;s not a lot to rent in that area... Whitehall has a couple of apartment buildings to choose from..

  • Family Cabins

My husband has just decided that he wants us to take a few days and get away with the kids to a cabin by the lake. Well, where?? He doesn%26#39;t know and neither do I. We live in North Little Rock and would like to find a cabin that will sleep the four of us and not put us on a double bed. The kids are small and would be fine with a sleeper sofa. We%26#39;d also like to take the ski boat and have lake access at hand. Oh, and of course we don%26#39;t want to spend a fortune on a two-night stay. Am I dreaming? I found a place called Hand Cove Resort on Norfork Lake. Anyone know anything about it or can recommend someplace else? Any help is truly appreciated!

    Family Cabins

I have the perfect place for you to stay, It is a rent by owner up on greers ferry and is a good bargin.. we are staying in it next weekend. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A nice deck and sits right on the lake and you can put your boat in near by and keep it right at the house...on the beach... And you can swim there as well...And it is private and close to restaurants and stores..

    http://www.vrbo.com/88040

And it only takes a hour or so to get there...We live in cabot, and it%26#39;s only 50 miles...

    Family Cabins

well, we stayed at the rental this past weekend, it was really nice...It was the cleanest place that I have ever stayed at. The owners live next door and are wonderful people and they even brought us blueberry cake while we were there. The lake was beautiful, the deck was perfect, The owners will even put your boat into the lake for you. It has 2 bedrooms, two full baths, and a fully stocked kitchen.. I would recommend it to anyone...

    Edelweiss Inn, Eureka Springs

My husband and I are thinking about Eureka Springs for our anniversary. Rather tight budget. I stumbled on Edelweiss Inn online and was wondering if someone could tell me what it%26#39;s really like.

    Edelweiss Inn, Eureka Springs

I%26#39;m not sure about that hotel, so am unsure of your budget. I have stayed at the Palace Hotel in ';downtown';. It was nice and you can walk to all the shops, bars, places to eat.

Recomendation for airport shuttle to XNA?

I am trying to arrange for airport transportation for my sister from Lincoln,AR to XNA, since it appears to be the only commercial airport in her area. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good/inexpensive airport shuttle? I called Express Shuttle and they wanted $58 one way, and Dynasty wanted $110. Am I being unreasonable? Is XNA really the only airport around the Fayetteville area? Thank you.

Recomendation for airport shuttle to XNA?

This post may be to late, but here we go. XNA is in Highfill. Highfill is in the middle of nowhere (population 379). It is a fairly lengthy drive from Lincoln to XNA. The $58 shuttle does not sound unreasonable. NWA has just recently started a regional transit system and the only cabs we have are operated by sleazy strip club owner. The only other ';real'; airport we have is the Fayetteville Regional Airport, but not much flies out of there. Sorry it is so expensive for your sister but unless she knows someone she is going to have to pay to get to XNA.

Recomendation for airport shuttle to XNA?

Thanks for the reply Walus. Turns out my sis is going to be able to get a ride from a friend. I%26#39;ve been to the Denver airport (out in the middle of nowhere too), so I guess that is the wave of the future for airports. The funny thing is that ';civilization'; grows up around the airport so bit by bit it is no longer in the middle of nowhere. :)

    King Biscuit 2006

Does anyone know the dates for next year%26#39;s festival? I want to try to include it in my travels but have a lot of planning to do!

    King Biscuit 2006

I don%26#39;t know about the 2006 dates, but I know that they changed the name recently. It was known as the King Biscuit Blues Festival, but it is now the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival. The website is: http://www.bluesandheritage.com/

I believe that it is typically the 1st weekend of October, but I could be wrong.

    King Biscuit 2006

    yes, the festival is Oct. 5, 6 %26amp; 7th.

  • Any good resturants open on Sundays????? Please say yes!

Are there any good resturants open in Hot Springs on Sunday afternoons? We are meeting some friends from out of state and promissed them some good food for lunch. I was surprised to find that Coy%26#39;s and McClards are not open for lunch on Sundays. Please tell me that we have options other than the chain resturants. HELP! We are meeting this Sunday so I need suggestions as soon as possible!

Any good resturants open on Sundays????? Please say yes!

Absolutely! The Brau Haus, the Brickhouse Grill, Rolando%26#39;s and Fisherman Wharf all great....and open on Sundays!

The Brau Haus features excellent German food, the Brickhouse Grill has much better steaks (and better price) than Coy%26#39;s, Rolando%26#39;s serves Nuevo Latino food which is very nice, and of course, Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf is always great.

    Enjoy!

Any good resturants open on Sundays????? Please say yes!

All the websites I have looked at say that the Brickhouse Grill is closed on Sundays. Do you know what time they open. I would like to stay with something more main stream, so that looks the best out of everything you listed. Anymore suggestions??

I just called the Brick House Grill for you...and yes they are open on Sundays from 5 p.m. to about 9 p.m.

Read original post.... they are looking for somewhere open FOR LUNCH on Sunday...

Good luck! Most locally owned, old place will not be open for lunch on Sunday if at all on Sunday. They make enough revenue without being open and this gives them time with family for church, etc.

I was merely responding to her comment that the Brick House Grill was closed on Sundays.

Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf is a great setting, right on the lake and they are open at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Watch out, Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf on the lake is just another family style or chain fish house which is marginal to say the least..that%26#39;s my experience, I would not go there at all

This is too late to help Jennlynn who I think needed the info yesterday but to me the Arlington Sunday Brunch is one of the wildest experiences in the State. With live piano music, a spread that ranges from huge smoked salmons to custom made donuts, all in a grand old historic hotel, it is like nothing else in the State. I am getting hungry just thinking of it.

Has anyone used this feature for the Crescent Hotel? If so, how long did it take to receive notification of whether your %26#39;bid%26#39; was accepted?

Yes, I%26#39;ve used it a couple times! They aren%26#39;t REAL fast responding...I think it usually took 3 or 4 days.. maybe 5. But they do respond, so hang in there!!

Labor Day weekend to Arkansas from Dallas area

Hi, we plan to go to Arkansas in Labor day weekend, but have no idea on how to plan the detail. should we just go to Hot spring for the entire weekend or do we have enough time to visit other places? I read other thread suggested Eureka spring, we are interested too. well, for a first time visitor to Arkansas, can someone suggest a 3 day itienary? thanks.

Labor Day weekend to Arkansas from Dallas area

Well, it all depends on what kind of things you like to do... Hot springs has the old bath house row, with historical hotels, stores, restaurants. And There also is the lakes, hamilton is right in the heart of hot springs, there%26#39;s a couple of boating activities that are fun like ride the ducks, and the belle of hot springs river boat , dinner cruise, and there is magic springs , a theme park with a built in water park. Alot of people like to stay at the old historic hotels, They get mixed reviews. I would look up the hotels listed on this web site and figure what%26#39;s best for you. There is enough to do there to keep you busy for 3 days.

    http://www.belleriverboat.com/

    http://www.rideaduck.com/

    http://www.nps.gov/hosp/

The last link is for hot springs national park info.

And as far as eureka springs, it might be a bit far from texas..

But it is really a unique place to go.

So you might want to take a peek at this web site.

    http://www.eurekasprings.com/

There are also a few things in little rock that might be fun as well, like the clinton library, the river market, and a few historic sights .

    http://littlerock.about.com/

    http://www.littlerock.com/

arkansas also has many great parks as well...

    http://www.arkansasstateparks.com/

Narrow it down a little and we should be able to help more..

Labor Day weekend to Arkansas from Dallas area

If you are interested in history come to Little Rock for your three days. The number one attraction is the Clinton Presidential Library. The Old State House Museum and the Historic Arkansas Museum are all within walking distance of each other in the River Market Area. Many fine restaurants and clubs are also nearby as well as several hotels.

The Arkansas Arts Center and the MacArthur Military Museum are both in MacArthur Park.

Links to these can be found on this site:

    http://www.littlerock.com/

Little Rock has beautiful neighborhoods with old restored homes. For tour information here%26#39;s the site of the Quapaw Quarter Association:

    http://www.quapaw.com/AboutUs.htm

Hot Springs in the summer is all about lakes and boats. The old downtown area is interesting but not something that can occupy you for more than a day.

Fordarama and oldcpa have some excellent recommendations. I live in NWA and frequent Eureka Springs when I don%26#39;t have time to spend the night else ware (was just there for the afternoon of the Fourth of July). Eureka is nice but some may find a whole weekend there boring if you do not enjoy the outdoors.

If you only have the weekend to spare I recommend that you either go to Hot Springs OR Little Rock. Both have more than enough to keep you occupied for a weekend.:-) I am not sure of your age and if you are traveling with children but I am thirty-something married w/child and love to go to Little Rock for the weekend when I can. There are many things to do with or without family. I am not trying to downplay Hot Springs though; I just haven%26#39;t been there in a few years. Also if I remember correctly Hot Springs is only about thirty minutes from Little Rock.

if you want bigger city activities, go to Little Rock. If you want scenery and outdoor activities, go to northern Arkansas.

But if you are driving, you may not want to drive the 7 hours from Dallas to Eureka Springs. I%26#39;m assuming you are driving?

Western and northern Arkansas are very pretty. I would vote for Eureka Springs - check out the Buffalo River area too.

If scenery is what you want, you can still experience it if Hot Spings is where you decide to go. Look into accomodations atop Queen Wilhelmina State Park - I believe it is the highest point in southern Arkansas. There is a lodge up there - Castle in the Sky mountain lodge. You could stay there on your way back to Dallas.

if you stop to eat in Fayetteville - ask around for the Tex-Mex place where you can watch them make the tortillas through the window - some of the best Tex-Mex food I have ever had - and I live in Texas! I%26#39;ll try to find out the name, if that%26#39;s the area where you go.

it all just depends on what you want to experience

Thank you all for the informative reply, we are a couple in our 40%26#39;s with a teenage boy , driving from Dallas. We really don%26#39;t have particula idea on what to do, just want to experience some new place that%26#39;s different. From reading all the reply, I guess we will go to Little Rock and Hot Springs half and half for the 3 days long weekend, one night each. And later plan a longer vacation to Eureka Spring as scienic is always our first choice. By the way, is Embassy Suite in Hot Spring at a good location for us visitors? (we have Hilton point to use). Also want to know when/where for Fall Foilage in Arkansas? I think Arkansas is the closest places to Dallas for a peak of Fall Foilage, am I right?

We%26#39;ve stayed at the Embassy Suites and think it%26#39;s a good hotel. It%26#39;s within a short walk to HS bathhouse row.

Arkansas is the best place for fall foliage

Here%26#39;s a web site for fall foliage:

    arkansas.com/calendar/fall_foliage_pg1.asp

There is also a embassy suites in west little rock that is nice , if you need to use points while in little rock, Embassy Suites Little Rock

Located at I-430 and I-630 in west Little Rock, in the heart of the financial and shopping district. Situated among rolling hills and green forests, the natural surroundings continue inside to the atrium%26#39;s lush greenery and sparkling stream filled with beautiful fish. Just 15 miles west of the airport and 9 miles west of downtown, we are conveniently located just minutes away from all of central Arkansas%26#39; attractions. We offer over 14,000 sq ft of flexible meeting space and world-class catering services. It is really easy to find and to get back on the freeway to downtown Little rock where the river market district is.

    embassysuites.com/en/…

thanks, CPA and Ford, for your quick response. I am going to book the two Embassy suites today, sounds like they are in the right location.

also thanks for the link, I didn%26#39;t know you have this kind of info., I thought only the northeastern states has Fall foilage calendar. we will plan one weekend in Oct. to AR for it. We just moved to Dallas area last summer, can%26#39;t wait to explore the neighboring states.

The west LR Embassy Suites is far removed from the sites in downtown. It is also in the most, congested traffic areas in town. It is a good hotel but unless you have business in west LR I suggest you look at hotels in the downtown area. In particular there%26#39;s a Courtyard right in the middle of the River Market district.

So down town is tourist place? will check that area, I hope they don%26#39;t charge parking.

    What to do in Arkansas

I am trying to figure out where my next vacation will be. I am asking everyone in the state what they would suggest that is off the beaten path %26amp; may not be an attraction that one would know of (either in or out of the US).

My plan is to ask each state this question to get ideas -- even if I don%26#39;t go and do everything this trip, I plan on expanding my list of places to go.

    Thanks!

Anyone know a motel in Greebrier, Arkansas?

We are going to a place near Greenbrier and we just learned there is a brand new motel there. I can%26#39;t find the name anywhere to make a reservation. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

Anyone know a motel in Greebrier, Arkansas?

That would be Greenbrier Inn and Suites 501-679-5100. The place is new and just north of the town. The phone number is good but haven%26#39;t yet tested the email address greenbrierhotel2@alltel.net.

  • Just a few more questions...

Well here I am, back again. We are booked to arrive at Buffalo Point September 15 - I am so excited! Finally! Seemed like the summer would never end!

I%26#39;ve been trying to keep up with the river levels - it looks like it is pretty low. I am hoping you guys get some rain before then. If not, well, we will have fun hiking and enjoying the views.

So, trying to consider other things to do, what do you recommend?

We are looking at all the different caves available - Hurricane River, Blanchard Springs, Bull Shoals, etc... which one do you recommend - if we could only see one?

I am going to take my 9 year old searching for some ';gems';... she is a rock-aholic. I found several for crystal/quartz: Fiddler%26#39;s Ridge, Wegner%26#39;s, Arrowhead, etc... and then there is also the C of D State Park -- any one of these outshine the others (or is there one I didn%26#39;t mention that is better?). I want it to be fun for a 9 year old, but also enjoyable for an adult as well.

We probably will skip over the Hot Springs spas this time, as we will have the baby and the 9 year old with us. We may do a couple%26#39;s weekend another time. But what about Magic Springs? Is it pretty good? It seems to be pretty popular. Or the Science Museum and/or aquarium? We%26#39;ve been to the New Orleans aquarium (which is / was fabulous) so many times, that I%26#39;m not chomping at the bit to see another one, but if it%26#39;s exceptionally good, I may take a chance. But really - how many fish can you look at? LOL

The Ghost Tours in Eureka Springs?

The Arkansas Missouri Railroad - the Van Buren to Winslow route...

Okay alot of questions, but because we are traveling with a baby, I have to plan everything so that we can schedule in naps, etc... And I want to make this a great trip, we only take faily vacations every other year.

Any opinions and advice is so appreciated! This forum is always so helpful - trust me I read it all!!!

    -- Erin

    Just a few more questions...

hey,,, Stay away from the aquarium in hot springs, It is truely sad... As far as Magic springs, They are open only weekends by then.

    http://www.magicsprings.com/park_info.html

As far as the caves, i like Blanchard Springs, ...

And the ghost tours sound fun....

    as does the train...

I might have to try that one .... I hope it cools down a bit by september 15th, and a little rain would make it alot better as well..

    Just a few more questions...

I%26#39;d second the recommendation for Blanchard Springs as the cave to have if you%26#39;re having only one. It%26#39;s the best cave experience I%26#39;ve ever done.

I%26#39;ve never been to the aquarium in Hot Springs, but from the exterior, I%26#39;ve never seen any reason to go in. I like the Mid-America Science Museum -- my kids (6 and 4 at the time) enjoyed it the last time we went, about 3 years ago. We skipped it when we were there a couple of weekends ago only because we couldn%26#39;t work it into a pretty busy schedule of family events. If you have an hour or so to spare, the Visitor%26#39;s Center in Hot Springs National Park, in the old Fordyce Bathhouse on Bathhouse Row, was well worthwhile. It%26#39;s restored to what it would have been like in the early 20th century, and the kids (9 and 7 now, plus the 2.5 year old) also enjoyed it.

    Have a great time!

Thanks guys! Blanchard Springs looked like the best to me, as well. We will skip over the aquarium - that is pretty much what I figured. If you are ever in New Orleans, the one there is exceptional. Well, it was before Katrina, I haven%26#39;t seen it since last summer, so it might not be back up to par yet. I know almost everything died.

Has anyone ever heard of the Duck Duck Goose sale in Little Rock? I am considering staying an extra day or two to check that out, it looks like it might be fun - I love stuff like that. I was just wondering if anyone had ever been and if it was pretty good?

Well you guys, thanks so much for the information!

The duck, duck goose sale is awesome if you have kids. I know that they only take really clean nice things to sale. You can get a lot of name brand gently used clothes at a great price... And I to have been to the aqarium in New Orleans at , it would be hard to top that one... There is one in Atlanta that is suppose to be really nice as well...

Blanchard Springs are your best bet. You should really consider the ';Wild Cave Tour'; there. You need to make reservations in advance (at least a couple of days before you arrive). At that time of year only the ';Dripstone Trail'; is open - while beautiful an not to miss - it is the shortest of the tours. The ';Wild Cave'; will take you deeper and further.

You should also stop in downtown Mountain View for the crafts (and music on weekend evenings). If you want to hike - I%26#39;d head the to the Syallamo Bike Trial near Blanchard. The White River loop is excellent for hiking and there aren%26#39;t that many bikes where you need to worry about getting run over. You can also head up to Calico Rock for some beautiful views of the White River and Ozark National forest from the bluffs there.

I was in Hot Springs for a press convention last month and a couple of us went into the aquarium as we had some time to kill. Wasted $12 and 30 minutes. We could%26#39;ve killed time just as well sitting on one of the benches along Park St. DON%26#39;T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!!!!

  • my trip to Eureka Springs

I wanted to report back on my trip to Eureka Springs. We had a great time and enjoyed every minute of our trip. We stayed at the Basin Park Hotel and our stay there was wonderful. I know from the reviews of the hotel that some people thought it was old, we didn%26#39;t. It is a historical and charming hotel. Just be careful and don%26#39;t park under the trees in there parking lot, we had some black stuff fall from the trees and it does not come off. It does look like it is fading though. We went horseback riding which my daughters loved, and drove along Hwy 23 and went and saw the damn. We were going to ride a tram at one of the lakes but it was raining that day so we just rode around and enjoyed the sites. The two restaurants that we loved was Sparky%26#39;s and a little italian restaurant on Main Street that I can%26#39;t remember the name of. The people there always gave us good recommendations on where to eat. I will be glad to answer any questions.

    my trip to Eureka Springs

I%26#39;m so glad your trip went well. I knew going to eureka sprigs would be worth the drive..I guess you didn%26#39;t make it to hot springs. Glad the hotel was good for you as well... So I guess you enjoyed Arkansas...Make sure to come back... I am planning a tip to gulf shores this weekend, but here comes ernesto...I am hoping for the coas tsake that it does not turn into a bad hurricane...

    my trip to Eureka Springs

I sympathize with you on the black spots. We were in Williamsburg, VA a few years ago and parked a white car under trees for four days. The little black spots required a lot of elbow grease to remove. I%26#39;m curious what route you took to get to Eureka? What is your opinion about Arkansas%26#39; roads?

Thanks for the report back on the Basin Park and Eureka. It is encouraging that they have kept this landmark up and that we can pass along your recommendation with confidence.

Fordarama, you will want to keep an eye on Ernesto, all the projected paths are taking it up through Alabama. We definitely do not need another Hurricane, the entire Gulf Coast still has not recovered. My city is still not back to normal from Hurricane Rita.

Going to Eureka Springs, we took Hwy 40 to Hwy 23, I think that was the highway. That was an experience, the road had some sharp turns going up the mountain. We came back on Hwy 65 which was a lot better.

The views of the area are really something... I think ernesto is turning to florida, and will be gone by friday morning ....crossing fingers....

Glad you enjoyed your trip, Red! I will be making notes of what you said for when we head up that way. I know we want to spend a day or 2 in Eureka Springs. I%26#39;m sure you guys are watching Ernesto like we are down here in Lafayette - that is all we DON%26#39;T need! They said it could strengthen back up once it hits that warm water in the Carribean - I hope it keeps turned away from Louisiana. I hate it for anyone in it%26#39;s path, but we just can%26#39;t handle another one.

    water falls

Is there any water falls in the state hopefully close to Hot Spring that my family and I can swim in?

    water falls

Tim Ernst is Arkansas best nature photography and guide. He has written and/or published several guides on this exact topic.

    Go here:

    store.cloudland.net/merchant.ihtml…

And look for his Guide to Water falls and another one for swimming holes. They are accurate and full of good information and directions.

    water falls

The website that Zebras23 listed is the best and only resource that I know of for what you are looking for. With that said let%26#39;s get to the bad news. Arkansas waterfalls are rain dependant. Most of the pictures you see in the books are either in the fall or spring after substantial rains. Also many of the swimming holes in the book he published are not swimming holes this time of year. If you are looking at coming in a month or two there will hopefully be no problem. (My personal disclaimer) I am not an expert on the entire state and there may be a couple of places that are decent but check before you go.

That is a good point... We are way behind on rainfall...ANd you can never tell if we will be caught up a little by then.

I know that there is a waterfall at petit jean mountain state park.

I think it is not depended on rain as much.

Thanks everyone checkout my updated itinerary.

    what should I not miss

My family and I will be dropping my son off for school near Hot Springs. What is near by that we should see while we are there for 4 days.

    what should I not miss

Hot Springs is most famous as being the nation%26#39;s first resort town, and the thermal springs and historic bathhouses are a pretty good bet. There are a lot of art galleries in the area, too. If you%26#39;re interested in the ';odd'; things the city has to offer, there%26#39;s Tussaud%26#39;s Wax Museum, an alligator farm, and Tiny Town USA (Fascinating in that weird way.).

If you%26#39;re taking younger kids with you, you%26#39;ll probably want to visit Magic Springs (an amusement park) and Mid-America Museum (a kid-oriented science museum). And don%26#39;t forget to look for Bridge Street, which is the shortest city street in the world.

    what should I not miss

In Little Rock - the Clinton Library/Museum, the River Market area (next Library), Old State House (just down from River Market) and Central High School and the visitor center next to it.

Heading the Arkansas Ozarks to the North

Blanchard Springs Caverns - the most beautiful underground cavern system in the US (no kidding - I%26#39;ve seen them all). Here is a list of other things to do while in the Ozark area (from our web site www.edsrock.com):

    WHAT TO DO:

The list is literally endless because you basically have every outdoor activity known to mankind available within an hour%26#39;s drive. Here is a description and helpful links to some of the places and other items that guest have enjoyed. Let us know if you discover something else so it can be include.

    FISHING (RIVERS %26amp; LAKES):

A Fly Fishers Paradise Awaits - including World Record Trout

Without a doubt, trout fishing on the White and Norfork Rivers is what the vast majority of visitors to the area partake of. World record Brown trout have been caught on the Norfork River and the Brown and Rainbow trout in the White River are plentiful. From the Lodge you are a five minute walk to the docks of the White River,

the Norfork River is 20 minutes north on Hwy. 5. There are numerous places to rent boats and hire guides; here are some that are nearby:

To launch or rent a boat, engage a guide at Calico for White River fishing consider Jenkins or Bill Terry Boat Dock under the Hwy 5 bridge in Calico Rock or Lindsey Trout Dock, 3 miles up stream - 870-297-4543 or write HC61, Box 17, Calico Rock, AR 72519

Further down the river near Mountain View is Jacks (also a great place to eat catfish):

You can even hook up with “Orvis 1998 Guide of the Year” John B. Gulley.

Trout fishing not your cup of tea, want to catch that prize bass? Then you are in luck as well, as Bull Shoals and Lake Norfork, two of the best fishing lakes in the Ozarks are less than one hour away.

If you want any interesting twist on fishing and an educational opportunity for the kids, don%26#39;t miss the US Fish and Wildlife National Fish Hatchery at the base of the Lake Norfork dam. It is truly amazing to see literally 1000s of Rainbow, Brown and

Cutthroat trout used to stock area rivers.

BLANCHARD SPRINGS CAVERNS (NATIONAL FOREST SERVICE)

Without question Blanchard Springs Caverns are the best underground cave system in the United States. People who have visited Carlsbad in NM or Luray in VA say there is no comparison – Blanchard Springs Caverns are the best – namely because they are living caverns with all the color and water still present. Two trails, Dripstone and Discovery, are fully handicap/wheelchair accessible with Dripstone open year round. The third option is the “Wild Cave Tour” and is a new addition. It takes 3 to 4 hours

and you are guided on a walk and crawl through undeveloped portions of the cavern system. It is truly a remarkable experience. For the ';Wild Cave Tour'; advanced reservations (3 or 4 days before is usually sufficient) are required and no one under 10 is permitted on that particular trip.

MOUNTAIN BIKING - TRAILS FOR ALL AGES

SYLLAMO BIKE TRAIL (NATIONAL FOREST SERVICE)

    Internationally Acclaimed Mountain Biking

The International Mountain Bicycling Association in 2005 rated the Syllamo Bike trail as one of five Epic Rides. One of the trail heads is less than a 15 minute drive from Edsrock Lodge. This challenging trail will bring hours of exercise and visions of great beauty in the forest. A great description of the 50+ miles of trails is provided here by local experts. The trail is home to the annual Syllamo%26#39;s Revenge Race, plus several other events throughout the year. If you are a rider you don%26#39;t want to miss this.

    PIGEON CREEK TAIL SYSTEM

If you need more mountain bike adventures (or a warm-up for Syllamo) head north to Mountain Home to the Pigeon Creek Mountain Bike Trail System. Here you will find a system that is a bit shorter, but suited for all levels of Mountain Bikers.

    HIKING

There are several hiking opportunities through out the region and there are several trail books. The nearest developed trail is at the Visitor Center for Blanchard Springs Caverns, a 20 minute drive from the Lodge. The Rangers at the Center have plenty of

maps and will update you on what the best trail is at that time. The closest and one of the best in the Ozarks is the North Sylamore Creek Hiking Trail - This 14-mile trail follows North Sylamore Creek from Allison, Arkansas to Barkshed Recreation Area. It is located 15 miles southeast of Edsrock Lodge at Blanchard Springs Caverns visitor center. You can also hike the Syllamo Bike Trail. The ';White River Loop'; has several scenic spots along the way.

The National Forest Service has host of information and maps available at its web sites for activities within the Ozark/St Francis area.

    CANOEING

There is often nothing better than heading down the river on a canoe and enjoying all nature has to offer. This includes getting a canoe or kayak from one of the local outfitters, then floating down the White River by its scenic bluffs. Also Esdrock Lodge is an hour from the famous Buffalo National River. This is one of a few

unpolluted and free flowing river in the lower 48 states and provides a paradise for all levels of experience. You can reach several put in points within one to two hour drive from the lodge:

    SCUBA DIVING

Some of the clearest inland water in the nation is found at both Bull Shoals and Norfork Lakes. Many of the boat docks provide rentals for divers.

    VISITING HISTORIC CALICO ROCK

One of the simple pleasures of staying at Edsrock Lodge is a stroll down the hill to historic downtown Calico Rock. Make sure you stop at the visitor’s center to pick up the latest brochures. One of the favorite things for the young grandsons of the owners is an afternoon treat at the old fashion soda fountain at Clinkingbeard Family Store on Main Street. Also you can visit the oldest public structure in Arkansas - the Wolf House just north of Calico Rock near Norfork.

    WORLD RENOWNED FOLK MUSIC

If nature is not enough, then let music fill the air. The Ozark Folk Center is world famous for keeping the art of folk music and folk life alive. There are shows several times a week that you will find very enjoyable, plus classes and seminars on many aspects of ';Folk Life';.

And if you really want to ';step back in time'; you should head to Mountain View on Friday and Saturday night and make your way to the Court House Square. There you will find several small groups of musicians who meet simply for the pure joy of playing together. Pull up a chair, or better yet bring your own instrument and join in.

Make your way around the groups to get a wonderful cross reference of all types of genuine folk music.

    GOLF

For many no vacation is complete without a round (or several) of golf. At Edsrock Lodge you are just 30 minutes from Big Creek Golf in Mountain Home. Rated 5 out of 5 stars by Golf Digest in May 2004, this course will present a challenge and a nice day of golf for any handicap and level of experience.

    PLACES TO EAT

In Calico Rock on Main street is Don Quixote%26#39;s Cafe and the Clinkingbeard Lunch, while just out the highway one finds the White River Cafe, Leatherwood Restaurant, with Roscoe%26#39;s 7 miles from Pineville. You can find most anything between Mountain Home, Calico Rock and Mountain View. Here are a few of our guests favorites:

JoJo’s Catfish Wharf (Our favorite place for Catfish)

Tommy’s Famous Pizza (Voted best pizza in Arkansas – if you like cheese, go here):

    GOT TO SHOP

So you need a little break from nature, and want to hit the shops, there are several excellent shops in downtown Calico Rock and on the Square in Mountain View, there you%26#39;ll find some of the best local crafts at the Arkansas Crafts Guild, as well as at the nearby Arkansas Folk Center. In Mountain Home and nearby Hardy, you can find great crafts and antiques. Mountain Home has several fine Shopping facilities.

So, these are just a few of the things to do. You will find many more along the way

and also discover your own. Please let us know what we can do to make your stay

    enjoyable.

    Good stuff and thanks.

  • Fall Foliage route, Diamond Crater to Eureka Springs?

My mom and I are planning a quick run up to dig for pretty rocks at Diamond Crater and to see the fall foliage of the Ozarks and Ouachitas at the end of October. We%26#39;re coming from Houston, TX.

The Murfreesboro website had several recommended drives for foliage there near Diamond Crater, but what about when going up to Eureka Springs?

From satellite photos and maps, I%26#39;ve sketched out a potential route:

-Murfreesboro up 84 to Mt Ida.

-East on 270 past Lake Ouachita, curving north through Mountain Pine to the 7.

-North up the 7 to the 16.

-West on the 16 through St Paul to Fayetteville.

    -North on 540 to Rogers

-South/east along the lake so that we approach Eureka Springs from the south

We%26#39;d have all day to do this route (diamond digging is the day before), which I think we%26#39;ll probably need.

After leaving Eureka, we plan to drive East along the 62 to Mountain Home, south through Norfork, west through Big Flat to Marshall, then pick up the 65 and take that south to Little Rock, where we%26#39;d spend the night before heading back to Houston the following day.

Lots and lots of driving for the trip, but as the entire purpose of the trip (aside from digging for pretty rocks) is to see fall foliage and a brief visit in Eureka Springs, driving is expected.

Does that sound like a good route, or would we be better off with some changes for scenery?

Related question, along those routes are there any good short stops y%26#39;all would recommend, like a scenic half mile hike along a creek where we could stop and stretch our legs?

    Thanks!!

Fall Foliage route, Diamond Crater to Eureka Springs?

Oh, and we%26#39;ve been to Hot Springs before, so no need to swing through there. :)

Fall Foliage route, Diamond Crater to Eureka Springs?

Out of Norfork I%26#39;d continue South on Hwy 5 through, Calico Rock and Mountain View - much more scenic drive than 65 and it will take you into Little Rock as well. You might want to stop at Blanchard Springs Caverns b/t Calico Rock and Mountain View - they are spectacular.

    vegetarian

Are there any restaurants or grocery stores in Hot Springs that are vegetarian friendly??

    vegetarian

You might try Cafe 1217 at 1217 Malvern Avenue. It is only open for lunch. You come in and order by a large case filled with large bowls of fresh salads and vegetables and various other dishes...many meat free. It usually makes the Arkansas Times list of best restaurants in Hot Springs in one category or the other. I It is not a vegetarian restaurant but there are always lots of meat free possibilities.

  • Bars?

My husband and I will be in town Wed.-Fri. next week. Are there any bars/clubs in the area that have a fun, upbeat vibe?

    Thanks!

    Bars?

I%26#39;m not sure ';clubs'; exist in Eureka Springs - there are bars, but they are of the ';small-town'; variety. Very laid back - downtown is mainly shops, hotels and restaurants.

    Bars?

What about live music during the week? Anything? I just know that this is a laid-back getaway for us but we%26#39;d like to get out and have a few drinks one night.

there is live music - check out www.eurekasprings.com/nightlife

My husband and I just got married there, and we went to the Tiki Torch and Uncle Tuckers....oh yeah and New Dehli(good live music)

    Any Eureka Springs spa recommendations?

I%26#39;m looking forward to staying in Eureka Springs the last two weeks in October. During my stay, I hope to make two day spa visits. From what I%26#39;ve read, the New Moon Spa at the Crescent Hotel is supposed to be the best. Has anyone had extraordinarily good experiences at the New Moon or any other day spa in Eureka Springs? Also looking for recommended massage therapists by name at these spas.

Side question: Will the beautiful fall colors that Eureka Springs is famous for be taking place while I%26#39;m there?

    Many thanks to whomever answers.

    Any Eureka Springs spa recommendations?

My wife and I vacation in Eureka Springs 5 or 6 times a year minimum. It is a beautiful city with an incredible atmosphere. We have tried several of the massage therapy operations and have found one, Healing Benefits, http://www.healingbenefits.net/ that we now go too exclusively. They have a great staff and excellent accommodations. A couple’s room is available as well as private rooms. We have never been to the New Moon; it looks very nice and would probably be an excellent choice for spa treatment. I recommend staying at the Crescent; it has a rich history worth exploring. There is a wonderful ghost tour available that is spiritual/historical and no “boo” type shenanigans.

Depending on the weather you have an excellent chance at hitting the fall foliage.

    Have a great trip.

    Oak Crest Cottage

    Hi!

Does anyone have input on ';Oak Crest Cottage?'; We will be staying at the ';Elaines Treehouse';. Also are their actual springs that you can go to in Eureka?

    Oak Crest Cottage

Hi there - I just saw your post and wanted to find out how you liked Oak Crest? I am trying to find a nice place to spend our 1st anniversary. I ultimately wanted to stay in one of the treehouses, but since they are booked that weekend, I am considering one of the Rock Cottages. Did you happen to see them? Is this a good location? Any comments on Oak Crest would be greatly appreciated!

    Many thanks ~ Laurie

This is the most romantic place. Owner Elaine loves to help you pull off the perfect romantic surprise for your sweetie. They perform marriage ceremonies and photography the event for you. Little spotted twin does were living under our tree house cottage when we were there this summer. It%26#39;s fun, it%26#39;s whimsical, it%26#39;s very romantic. Oak Crest Cottages are not handicap accessible, no pets, no kids allowed. The charming hosts can direct you to the best dining and sight seeing. Make reservations well in advance.

The rock cottages are beautifully decorated, small, but romantic and within my budget. We liked the Monet’s Garden theme. They all have big Jacuzzi tubs, queen or king beds, coffee makers. The Cottages are really very close, but they have the feeling of seclusion and privacy.

  • Stopping half way to Destin

Getting ready to leave for Destin, where%26#39;s the best place/hotel to stop half way. Leaving late afternoon for a early arrival Saturday morning?

    Stopping half way to Destin

What is your starting point? I%26#39;m not clear if you are saying that you are staying in Arkansas? Or if you are starting here...

If you are starting in arkansas, then a good place to stop is between jackson and hattisburg, a town called magee. There is a small hotel called the relax inn. It%26#39;s an older hotel, but it is cheap and it is clean. And it%26#39;s right next door to some fast food restaurants as well near a wal-mart.

    Relax Inn Motel

    1680 Simpson Highway 49

    Magee, MS 39111

    (601) 849-5278

And another great way to go to avoid alot of traffic, is to go down 49 ouside of hattisburg to avoid the traffic lights on 98, And it seems faster.. it takes you to I-10 at gulf port...It is a bit farther, but it saves time...

I would not go on 55 all the way to jackson because it is farther, useing 98 from jackson to hattisburg is way shorter..

    Stopping half way to Destin

Thanks for the advice. I don%26#39;t see 98 from Jackson to Hattiesburg, can you elaborate?

oops, sorry....it%26#39;s 49 you take to Jackson to Hattiesburg, alot of people use 98 from hattiesburg to mobile, but the traffic is really bad in some areas, and it%26#39;s known by bloody 98 . Because of all the wrecks, so going all the way down on 49 to I-10 is best.

    Shopping??

Okay, well after MONTHS of anticipation, we are leaving late Thursday night - I am SO psyched! We are staying at Buffalo Point and we will be going here and there all over the place, but mostly just relaxing for 9 long days!! I am so glad!

So my mom asked today if there was any good shopping. I didn%26#39;t know the answer to that question - so could someone help me out?? I see that Eureka Springs says that they have good shopping - but what is good shopping? Antiques? That is up my mom%26#39;s alley. But really - any shopping - outlet malls, antiques, etc...

    Thanks!!!!!

    Erin

    Shopping??

I don%26#39;t know of any outlet malls in or around eureka...From my knowledge there is only antique type stores there...You will be very close to branson and it has two large outlet malls and a new branson landing open air mall on lake taneycomo....It is something else.....It has a bass pro shop and a belks department store as well as Joes crab shack and a famous daves BBQ.

I wish I could help you more with that.....It is a beautiful drive to branson and does not take very long..But I%26#39;m sure it might not be in your plans....Let us know how your trip goes... I wish The trees were turning, but they are still pretty green......

    Shopping??

Thanks a bunch! Yes, we are probably doing Branson cause I want to see the Titanic Museum, so I will pass the word along to my mom. I just hope you get a little more rain so we can canoe, the water seems to be a little low right now. I think in one or two areas, it says ';low but floatable'; - I hope it just doesn%26#39;t get too low to float before we get there! Ha - now that I said my rain wish, it will probably be sunny until we get there and then it will rain the entire time!

Can%26#39;t wait - counting down the seconds!

    Erin

be sure to ask for the family discount on the Titanic museum, Five of us got in for $50.00 dollars. Instead of the $20.00 a person cost..

    Domestic Tranquility Cabins???

Hi. We are getting married on the 23rd of September and are looking at the Domestic Tranquility Cabins for our honeymoon. What do you guys think?

    Domestic Tranquility Cabins???

I stayed there in May and the cabins are the most unique cabins I have ever stayed in. The owners are lovely and very hospitable. It would be the perfect place for a honeymoon. It is quite and secluded and romantic. I hope I am not too late with this , but I just ran across your request. You will not be sorry . You will love it. My best to the both of you where ever you stay.

  • 1st time in Hot Springs

I am planning a trip to Hot Springs for Oct 13-16. I have never been and would like any and all suggestions for places to eat and things to do. We are planning to stay at the Andrea Rose cottage. Has anyone heard anything about it? I was also wondering about the winery and various bathhouses.

    1st time in Hot Springs

There are plenty of things to do and see in hot springs. First of all the foliage will be beautiful by then. There is a mountain tower that would give you a view for miles. It should be a beautiful sight with all the colors changing.

    www.hotspringsar.com/info/tower/tower.htm

    http://www.hotsprings.org/things_to_do/

I%26#39;ll post more to see and do later. I%26#39;m off to work.

    1st time in Hot Springs

There is our famous horse track that has simulcast racing that time of year. ANd it has casino type betting machines that can be fun...

    http://www.oaklawn.com/

Avoid the aquarium, it is a waste of money and time.

As far as the andrea rose cottage is a good place to stay. Hot springs has many fine B%26amp;B%26#39;s.

The Belle of hot springs is a nice dinner / cruise boat that you can ride on lake hamilton. It would be really nice by october.

    http://www.belleriverboat.com/

A really unique little known place to eat is Mr Millers- Located in Hot springs in an old house right on the banks of Lake Hamilton, Serving Hot springs for over 50 years. With fried chicken, fried quail, Chicken livers and chicken pot pie...Located at 4723 Central Ave.; 501 525-8861

    The locals love it.

Make sure to check out the arlington hotel and it%26#39;s hotel the majestic.

And another unique place to eat is .Molly%26#39;s- Located in Hot springs, ) This place has been around for at least 60 years. It%26#39;s in an old house. This is only restaurant in the state where you can get Jewish specialties such as chicken in the pot (best thing on a large menu), kreplach and matzo ball soup.538 W. Grand Ave.; 501 623-6582

If you%26#39;ll plan your trip a little earlier you can be in Hot Springs during their annual OktoberFest, here%26#39;s a site with information:

    hotspringschamber.com/events/oktoberfest.asp

Another outstanding attraction is Garvan Woodland Gardens

    http://www.garvangardens.org/

Bathhouse Row on Central Ave in downtown Hot Springs is a great place to walk and see what brought visitors to Hot Springs in the past. Here%26#39;s a link with bathhouse information:

    www.hot.springs.national-park.com/sights.htm

You mention a winery, I don%26#39;t believe there is an actual winery in the area although there is a shop by that name that sells Arkansas wines.

For restaurants McClard%26#39;s is a must and Mollies, the Brickhouse Grill, Coy%26#39;s and Bella Arti are all fine locally owned places.

Unfortunatly you won%26#39;t be able to try Mrs. (Mr.?) Miller%26#39;s as it closed a year or two ago.

You may be too early for fall leaves. The color depends on the weather. Here%26#39;s the State Parks site for fall foliage:

    arkansas.com/calendar/fall_foliage_pg1.asp

One other thing, also Oaklawn Park Racetrack is currently having simulcasting but has not yet begin with video poker and probably won%26#39;t until November.

Do visit the Arlington Hotel. It%26#39;s a great place for drinks in the lobby bar.

well, they already have machines in place at the race track, and have for a couple of years now, I personally have used one ..they are set up at the far end of the building , just down from the paddocks. The machines are set up like slot machines, But are about horse races, they are called instant racing. We are getting regular gambling machines in the future.so there are indeed machines. And sorry about the resturant closing, One of the last times I was there it was still open...The fall colors are subjective, I have seen color as early as mid october, and leaves on the ground by end of october..They are already changing a bit now...Fall comes early when we have had a dry spell. The colors are just not as nicee. But no matter. Hot springs is beautiful no matter. I am sure you will enjoy it.

You won%26#39;t find instant racing machines in casinos, here%26#39;s Oaklawn%26#39;s web page explaining them:

    www.oaklawn.com/instant_racing/story.asp

Oldcpa is dead-on in his recommendations. Belle Arti for Italian, McClard%26#39;s for barbeque, and the Arlington for drinks in the lobby (or possibly Sunday buffet brunch). Mrs. Miller%26#39;s is history. The Fordyce bath house tour is pretty interesting. Garvan Gardens is worth a visit. You didn%26#39;t mention kids but should they be along, try Mid America Museum. My favorite thing in Hot Springs is to ';look up'; and ';around';. Downtown has a history which never ceases to amaze me. Look up and past the T-shirt shops and you will see the remnants of Historic Hot Springs...from Capone years and before. Gambling and assorted other vices went on in this bawdy old town and the remnants of the historical roots are still there...but you have to look kind of hard (as the city has a poor record of historic preservation). For example, the wax museum on Central Avenue was once the Southern Club, one of the largest wide-open illegal gambling clubs in the country for decades. Capone supposedly had a room at the Arlington Hotel with a view of the Southern Club front door (not sure why). So prowl around, walk through the old neighborhoods and downtown and be observant of the unusual hostory of the place. I wish you were to be there the following weekend as they have a great event...the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, one of the best events of its kind in the country.

If you like Mexican, definately try Jose%26#39;s..It is on central coming into

Hot Springs. Also, they are putting the finishing touches on the

new Olive Garden on Central Ave., across from Wal-Mart. Buffalo

Wings is also a new eating establishment on Central. You might

try Cajun Boilers(seafood, even has ';gator';) or the Whistlestop. They both have excellent food. Make sure you go up the mountain

tower. You can see for miles......

Thank you all for your help. I am getting very excited now. Any more information you have would be great. Thanks again.

Lookout Point Lakeside Inn is definetly the place to stay in Hot Springs (www.lookoutpointinn.com), it was even featured in Southern Living!

I highly recommend Cafe Pompeii for an intimate atmosphere with an amazing eclectic menu!! Like the others said, you definetly have to go to the gardens.

    Good Luck!
